Many people just think of sedation dentistry as something for people that have a fear of the dentist. But there are many other patients that can benefit from sedation dentistry. Dr. Siddhi Patel of Park Dental, a dentist in Hilliard, OH, explains the benefits of sedation dentistry.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to ensure a patient is relaxed and calm throughout their dental procedure. At Park Dental, we offer three different types of sedation.
The first is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This is breathed throughout the procedure, both taking effect and diminishing quickly. You should be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment. Laughing gas keeps you calm while allowing you to remain alert enough to answer any questions the dentist may have.
Next, oral conscious sedation is a step above nitrous oxide. Sometimes these two methods are combined. Oral conscious sedation is a prescribed pill that’s taken a certain amount of time before your appointment. This form of sedation takes longer to wear off, so you’ll need a ride to and from the appointment. You’ll be more relaxed and may fall asleep during the procedure, or you may not remember parts of the procedure.
Last, IV sedation is only used for specific cases and treatments. This is coordinated with a local anesthesiologist that will administer the treatment and monitor vitals throughout. IV sedation takes you further under, making you “asleep” during the procedure. You won’t remember any of it. This is usually done for multiple procedures at once, anything severely invasive, or for patients with intense anxiety.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is most commonly used for patients with dental anxiety. It can be hard for patients that suffer from dental fear to get dental care regularly. If these patients aren’t getting regular dental care, they’re more likely to have issues that can cause the need for more intensive restorative dentistry treatment. Sedation dentistry allows these further procedures to be done, as well as regular dental care.
Sedation is also beneficial if there are multiple procedures that need to be done at once. It can be hard for anyone to sit still for long periods of time. This is also true for children and people with specific health issues that may have trouble sitting still at all. Sedation allows them to get any treatment that requires them to be still, to protect both them and the dentist.
If you have a bad gag reflex, it can basically be like your body fighting the dentist as they’re trying to work in your mouth. It makes treatment uncomfortable for you as well. Sedation allows that gag reflex to relax to make it easier for the dentist to do the work that needs to be done.
