If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, the first thing we have to do is a thorough cleaning. We will scale all of the tartar off your teeth and underneath your gums. Sometimes this procedure requires anesthetic to numb the gums for patient comfort. An antibacterial mouth rinse typically is prescribed to those patients after receiving treatment.
When periodontal disease is in a more aggressive form, Dr. Patel will discuss options for gum surgery.
Once the disease is under control, it is important to maintain the health of your teeth so tartar and plaque don’t build back up. Daily brushing, flossing, and mouthwash can prevent this buildup. However a routine maintenance program will be determined by your dentist and hygienist so that your periodontal disease does not progress. Typically, these will be every 3 – 4 months.
